Chemistry of Absinthe and Tasting -Nov 10 from 7pm to 9 pm at Avondale Sour Room
The local section will have an event during the Southeast Regional Meeting of the ACS (SERMACS) Nov 10 from 7pm to 9 pm at Avondale Sour Room that will be open to the public, but would be of particular interest to chemists. Ted Breaux is a world expert in the chemistry of absinthe. He also the founder and owner of Jade Liqueurs. His story can be read on the website https://jadeliqueurs.com/history.htm.
“The absinthes recreated by Jade Liqueurs® were made possible only through the discovery and acquisition of immaculately preserved bottles of the most famous original absinthes of the 19th century. Armed with an education and experience in applied analytical sciences, Breaux has worked in conjunction with other accomplished scientific minds in perfecting the sophisticated techniques needed to unlock the many secrets of the original liquor. Some of this research has been published in peer reviewed scientific journals, and includes objective insights into mysterious topics, such as the content of vintage absinthe and facts about thujone.”
The cost for this event will be $10, and is open to members of the local section and nonmembers.

More about Dr. Rupar:
- Due to their desirable mechanical properties, ease of processability, and low cost, polymers have supplanted many traditional materials in a large range of applications. However, despite their extensive adaptation, most commercially available polymers are passive; they have useful mechanical properties but lack advanced chemical or electronic functionality. Our aim is to introduce novel functionality into polymeric materials through the incorporation of inorganic elements. As our research encompasses the areas of polymer chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and materials science, students in our group will gain experience in the design and synthesis of both small molecules and polymers, and will use a wide range of characterization techniques including NMR, IR, UV-Vis, size-exclusion chromatography, x-ray crystallography, light scattering, thermal analysis, and electron microscopy.
